Backed Kickstarter Projects

Here is a list of some of the tools I've backed on Kickstarter, in order to share with my Maker Club!  (Most recently backed projects listed first)

Makeraser + Makelastic - Accessories for 3D Printers (to be funded February 2014)  A scraper and acetone applicator multi-tool for finishing ABS prints, and Makelastic to rubberize PLA.  Cool stuff, and an interesting physical science connection!

Circuit Scribe: Draw Circuits Instantly (Funded 793% in December 2012 - in Urbana, IL, no less!)  Circuit Scribe is a rollerball pen that writes with conductive silver ink. If you missed the Kickstarter campaign, they are still available for pre-order.

Kano: A computer anyone can make (Funded 1522% in December 2012!!)  It's "Simple as Lego, powered by Pi."  It is also worth checking out Kano Blocks, a visually programming language (Debian Linux).  Onboard Scratch, Codecademy, and "Hacking Fundamentals," an introduction to the world of the Linux shell, where you can join the free software movement worldwide.  Cool!

Maker - A documentary on the Maker Movement (Funded 216% in November 2012)  ""Maker" is a feature-length documentary that looks into the current maker movement in America – a new wave of Do-It-Yourself and Do-It-Together fueled by passion and powered by the advent of new technologies."

The Peachy Printer - The First $100 3D Printer & Scanner! (Funded 1302% in October 2013)  This inexpensive 3D printer has some very creative ways to deal with controlling the lasers, moving the z-axis, etc.  Read more about it on our blog post.  Unfortunately, we did not get a printer as a reward since, no matter how innovative it is, having two salt water tanks near a computer in a room full of 12 year olds is still not a good idea!

Structure Sensor: Capture the World in 3D (Funded 1290% in November 2013)  Pretty cool - a 3D scanner that snaps onto your iPad!  Here is a video of the Structure Sensor in action at CES 2014.  "If you’re a developer, Structure gives you the ability to build mobile applications that interact with the three dimensional geometry of the real world for the very first time."   And, for a BIG announcement, looks like 3D Systems has partnered up with Occipital to launch this scanner as the iSense!  Good thing the Kickstarter orders get filled first!

Robot Turtles: The Board Game for Little Programmers (Funded 2524% in September 2013)  Robot Turtles is a board game for kids ages 3-8, that teaches the fundamentals of programming. They are available (while supplies last) at robotturtles.com.

Sesame Ring - Where will it take you? (Funded 382% in September 2013)  This clever 3D-printed ring allows you to communicate with any RFID tag-enabled device, including public transit!  Our Kickstarter reward is CharlieCard-specific, so it is going to my sister in Boston, but word on the street is that they may be headed to SF soon!

DINO PET - a living, interactive, bioluminescent pet (Funded 337% in September 2013)  This dinosaur-shaped, 3D-printed dinoflagellate nightlight may be more of a science than 3D printing connection, but hey - we love bioluminescence!

3Doodler: The World's First 3D Printing Pen (Funded 7813% in March 2013).  This is pretty self-explanatory as the world's first 3D printing pen.  We have received our 3Doodler and it's certainly been a middle school hit!

MaKey MaKey: An Invention Kit for Everyone (Funded 2272% in June 2012) Make + Key = MaKey MaKey! It makes "anything" a key.  If you've never played with a MaKey MaKey, you should definitely watch the video.   MaKey MaKey, especially when teamed up with Scratch, some cardboard, duct tape and foil, is endless hours of entertainment and learning!  You can buy one on makeymakey.com or Amazon.

Filabot: Plastic Filament Maker (Funded January 2012) - What a cool idea!  To take recycleable plastic and turn it into 3D printer filament.  We were most excited to recycle our failed prints!  The reward level was a plastic tape dispenser made of recycled filament, but as of Jan 2014, we haven't seen it yet.

Here are the ones that got away, but we look forward to purchasing and playing with:

Matterfrom 3D Scanner (was on Indiegogo, April 2013)
